The Women Development Cell of Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management organized an enlightening and empowering interactive session titled “From Awareness to Action: Mastering Self-Defence in Real-Life Situations” on 9th September 2024. The session was conducted by Mr. Shihan Kamal Sharma, a renowned self-defence expert, and martial arts instructor. Mr. Sharma is Black Belt 7th Dan (OGKI & WKF), Referee A (KIO) Judge B (AKF), Gen. Secretary District Ludhiana Karate Association. The event was specifically aimed at empowering female students with practical skills and knowledge in self-defence.
The primary objective of the session was to bridge the gap between theoretical awareness and practical application of self-defence techniques. It aimed to equip students with essential skills to handle real-life situations effectively, enhancing their confidence and safety.
The session began with a warm welcome from the Worthy Principal Prof. (Dr.) Vishal Kumar, thereafter Dr. Robin Kaushal, Convenor WDC introduced Mr. Shihan Kamal Sharma, highlighting his extensive experience and accomplishments in the field of martial arts and self-defence.
Mr. Sharma commenced with a detailed presentation on the importance of self-defence and situational awareness. His talk emphasized on understanding self-defence principles including awareness, avoidance, and assertiveness. Moreover, there was demonstration of various self-defence practical techniques, including escape manoeuvres, strikes, and defensive postures.
The session included live demonstrations where Mr. Sharma showcased practical techniques and encouraged participants to practice. He guided the students through basic defensive moves and techniques for escaping from common holds and grabs, effective counterattacks in case of physical confrontation and using everyday items like bags as improvised self-defence tools.
Students were given an opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with Mr. Sharma. He addressed various queries related to personal safety, confidence-building. During the session, participants practiced the techniques under Mr. Sharma’s supervision.
Students appreciated the practical approach and felt more confident about their ability to handle potential threats. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Manpreet Kaur, expressing gratitude to Mr. Sharma for his valuable insights and hands-on training. The Women Development Cell reaffirmed its commitment to providing more such empowering sessions in the future to support the safety and well-being of its students.
